I’ve been struggling to get rid of my personal Gmail address as Apple ID, which I’m using to purchase apps, songs, movies and register apple products I’ve bought for the family.
Last year I found out there is a way to do this, but didn’t get it to work correctly. Apple Support documents are confusing and all over the place, the support staff had no clue on how to help me. The tech websites were not helpful either. By trial-and-error, I also “wasted” (registered) some “good” email addresses along the process.
However, I just gave it another try a couple of days ago, and I think I’m getting it right this time.
Let’s cut to the chase of what I did, or will do – must be in the following sequence:
- Create an iCloud Email address for the Apple ID with 3rd party email address, follow the instructions here – iCloud: Set up an iCloud Mail email address
- Wait for 30 days
- Finally, change your Apple ID to the iCloud email address, follow the instructions here: If your Apple ID is a third-party email address
I did it wrong for step 1 previously… It’s not simply about “creating an iCloud email address”, it’s about “creating an iCloud email address for the Apple ID with 3rd part email address“. The is where all the tech medias out there giving wrong information to thier confusing viewers like myself.
I will finalise this post a month later, once step 3 is completed.
Update: 12-Aug-2018, performed step #3 and completed the switch successfully.
